09:00 – Tsonga v Mayer
Rankings are 13 and 48. They haven’t played before.
Tsonga beat Querrey in straight sets yesterday although the first set was a real struggle and was won on a tie break. His return from injury seems to be going ok. he looks a little rusty at times but that should improve with each match he plays.
Mayer has had a couple of good wins so far this week and beat Youzhny in 3 sets ( Youzhny seems to play a lot of 3 setters lately!) Before this week he hasn’t been enjoying too much success in recent tournaments.
Both players are serving well and hold serve 85%/80%. Stats are better for Mayer’s return of serve but as I said Tsonga will reduce the number of unforced errors with each match he plays.
As usual watch the opening couple of games but look to back Tsonga or both players on serve. A good chance of seeing a tie break in the opening set.
Tsonga is my pick to progress to the quarter finals.
Update: Tsonga won 7-5, 6-3.
13:00 – Monaco v Zverev
Rankings are 41 and 118. Head to heads are 1-1.
Monaco came back from a set down to beat De Bakker. He is playing to a high standard this week although has been poor prior to this tournament.
Zverev beat defending champion Davydenko in straight sets. He has improved his game over recent weeks. His serve has found its bite again which makes him more of a threat.
Both players have been fairly consistent. They hold serve 69%/74%. Monaco is known more as a clay court player and will run all day to keep the ball coming back. On today’s fast court Zverev has to be my pick. He is getting back to the form of a year ago when he was ranked around 50 in the world.
I expect a very tight match and won’t be at all surprised to see a three setter.
Back Zverev on serve.
Update: Not sure what was wrong with Zverev but Monaco won 6-0, 6-2.
