Sony Ericsson Open, Miami – Tuesday

22:00 – Tipsarevic v Simon

Rankings are  44 and 27. Head to heads are 1-0 to Simon.

I traded the first set of Simon’s match with Cuevas. Cuevas was about to serve for the set when the rain came down and play was supsended. I think that was about 1:20am so I decided to take the green and go to bed. It wasn’t looking like Simon’s day. Looking at the score today I was surprised to see how easily Simon took the second and third sets, losing just 3 games in total. Maybe Cuevas didn’t handle the break in play well and his momentum was lost.

Tipsarevic, thankfully, played a much more solid match against Petzschner than he had against Cilic. To be fair Petzschner was on the whole pretty poor but Tipsarevic got the job done well.

As Tennis Insight are still pissing about and don’t have their site working, decent stats are thin on the ground.

Tipsarevic has yet to lose a set although he has had to come through a couple of tie breaks, one against Cilic and one against Haase.

Simon has lost just the one set which was yesterday.

Both have been in reasonable form. Even though Simon is favourite on Betfair at 1.78 I would have to favour Tipsarevic to take the match. He served well yesterday and so is forgiven for the shaky play in the Cilic match.

As I didn’t see Simon’s comeback last night its difficult to assess it.

I won’t be in any rush to get involved from the start but would expect Simon to start slowly. Tipsarevic seems well up for the fight and will be encouraged if Simon struggles in his early service games.

After 2 or 3 games if  Tipsareic is holding well I will be backing him with half stake and using the rest to back him on serve. This match really should go to three sets and so a tight first set will prompt a lay of the set winner.

Update: Unfortunately I couldn’t stay awake for this one as games were delayed by more rain.

Tipsarevic took the opening set but Simon came back to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Other matches today

As it is difficult to get adequate stats and info for the games I will stick to just the one main match. However here are some brief thoughts on some of the other matches.

Del Potro seems to be getting back near his best. He out hit Soderling in the last round. Fish had a great win over Gasquet although the Frenchman didn’t look himself at all. DP’s price does look a little low at 1.28 though and I think its a market over reaction to his return of form.

Update: Del Potro seemed to be struggling and the market was over reacting in the early games. Fish came through 7-5, 7-6.

Isner v Anderson looks like a back the server match. I think we will see Anderson coming through that one. Isner just not quite right lately.

Update: Anderson won 6-3, 7-6.

Petkovic v Jankovic – If Petko can beat Wozniacki then she has a great chance to beat Jankovic. Jankovic seems to have found some of her old form recently. I think Petkovic is experienced enough not to suffer a drop in performance level following her victory over the number 1 player. Ideally Janko will break early for a lower priced lay of her.

Update: Jankovic was serving extremely well in the first set but she could keep playing at that level. Petkovic won 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
