Plenty of tennis on today with Madrid in full swing. However I’ll stick to the 2 finals on here.
In Germany the organisers will be happy that they have 2 home players in their final.
Defending champion Kohlschreiber takes on Tommy Haas.
They have met 4 times before. All their matches were on grass and 3 of them were in Halle. Kohlscreiber won their last match at Wimbledon last year in 5 sets. All their matches have been extremely close.
Haas hasn’t lost a set so far and took out in form Dodig in the semi final. Kohlschreiber lost just 1 set which was in his semi final. He needed a third set tie break to beat Brands.
I have to favour Haas today but there is a strong possibility of a 3 setter. His SP of 1.50 is too low given how close their previous matches have been. I will be waiting for 1.70 at least before getting on Haas.
Update: A very tight match. As Haas served for the match at 5-4 in the second set there had been just 1 break of serve in each set. Kohlschreiber broke him and took it to a tie break but Haas was too consistent.
Haas won 6-3, 7-6.
The Portugal final has Ferrer against Wawrinka.
Top seed Ferrer leads the head to heads 7-3 and has won 6 of their last 7 matches. Ferrer had a surprise defeat to Tursunov in Barcelona and his first match of this tournament wasn’t looking promising as he was taken to 3 sets by Roger Vasselin. His form has improved as the week went on and had a solid win over Seppi in the semi final.
Wawrinka’s first match this week also got off to a poor start as Ramos took the opening set 6-1. However we have often seen a sluggish, apparently uninterested Stan in first sets only for him to step up a gear or two and take control of the match. He needed 3 sets to beat Carreno Busta in their semi final.
Ferrer starts as favourite at 1.45 . I have to favour him to get the win but its unlikely to be straight forward. Wawrinka has a new coach who seems to have made a difference already. His first set against Ramos was very like the old Stan though so I think this final is a little beyond him. I do expect Ferrer to trade much higher than SP.
Update: I certainly didn’t expect straight sets! I also didn’t expect ferrer to be in real danger of getting a bagel on clay. Wawrinka was almost unplayable in the opening set.
Wawrinka won 6-1, 6-4.
