Sunday night’s matches

Sydney

F Mayer v Muller:

Mayer retired from his match last week with a hamstring problem. He has said he didn’t want to risk further injury with the Oz Open coming up. He has also said that he is now completely fine and has been training well but you would expect that the slightest hint of the hamstring will start him thinking of pulling out.

Mayer has lost the last 4 matches when he started as favourite and Muller has lost 8 of the last 9 when he started as underdog!

Muller took Andy Murray to 3 sets last week. He was serving well but return of serve was letting him down. ( Murray won the last set 6-0 )

Mayer starts as favourite but I would feel nervous backing him with the threat of retirement hanging over it. I will start with a part stake lay on him and manage the position based on what I see in-play. Muller will need to do more than just serve well and if Mayer completes the match I think it will be very close.

Update: Mayer pulled put before the match.

Heineken Open:

Falla v Young:

They have played 3 times before and Falla leads the head to heads 2-1. However they haven’t played since 2009 and Young has improved his game considerably since then and especially last season.

American’s sometimes don’t travel well and this is Young’s first  game of the season whereas Falla has had one match which he lost to Dolgopolov. He took the first set to a tie break.

Many of the men have started their first match of 2012 slowly and I think Young will  do the same. However even though I won’t be surprised to see Falla take the first set I expect Young to take the match.

I won’t be entering the market at the start of the match as I want to see how Young looks in the early games. If his timing is off I will be laying him and hoping Falla can take advantage. I won’t keep the lay for very long though and will look to get on Young nearer evens.

Update: It was Falla who started slowly and Young took a 4-0 lead. Falla pulled him back but Young took the set. Fall came back to win the next 2 sets.

Falla won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
