Sunday’s Finals

Vinci v Begu:

Vinci managed to win a first set for a change in the semi final and played some more consistent tennis. It wouldn’t be WTA without several breaks though and they didn’t disappoint us.

Begu came through with the same score (6-4, 6-4) as the other semi final.

A big factor this week has been the heat. 35 degrees yesterday and forcast to reach 37 degrees today. Begu would seem to be less affected by the heat. Vinci has been complaining about it all week. Their starting prices are due to the conditions in my opinion. Vinci has greater experience in finals and has won 10 of the 12 finals she has played. She is ranked over 50 places higher than Begu and would be expected to handle the pressure of a final better. Begu has only played 1 WTA final which she lost but she has a great chance to get her first win today if she is able to withstand the heat.

Begu has been more consistent this week and I have to give her the edge. We are likely to see 3 sets but that also favours Begu.

Update: Some nice swings in that one. Vinci took a close opening set and then Begu levelled in a surprisingly one sided second set. She seemed to have the opper hand and took a break in the deciding set. She was 4-2 up and had break points for 5-2 but couldn’t take  them. After that her went and she didn’t win another game.

Vinci won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

Isner v Rochus:

This is the final we expected with the top seed playing last year’s runner up. The Little and Large show should see Isner take the title. He has looked least likely to be broken this week although Rochus has served well too.

I don’t see this being a very entertaining match and will be dominated by serves. If Isner looks like losing the lines judges will come up with a few dodgy calls the get him back on track.

Isner will take the opportunity to get just his second title for 12 months. I’ll be backing from the start. Thank god this tournament is almost over for another year!

Update: Isner broke to lead 5-4 in the first set. He hadn’t faced a break point up to that stage but faced one in the next game while serving for the set. He managed to hang on though. In the second set it went with serve and Isner took it in a tie break to win 6-4, 7-6.
