Thursday’s matches.

Lots of potentially great games but as they’re on clay they are a little harder to predict prematch.

I will start with a lay of Fognini at 1.50 as I have seen him crumble so many times. He said after his 3 set match in the last round that he was very tired but then came out and played a doubles match! He may be more interested in being fresh for Monte Carlo.

Update: I missed the start as I was on the Montanes match but got a lay at 1.70. Kavcic took the firsts et easily and served for the match in the 2nd set but allowed Fognini to come back. the third was almost a replay of the second and Kavcic had yet another chance to serve for the match but bottled it.

Fognini won 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Montanes looks a great back against Volandri, the man with the girl’s serve. I have made the mistake before of thinking he would need a match to make the transistion to clay after a lot of hard court matches but he doesn’t. My only concern here is that he retired in his last match with a neck injury. If he is fit he will win. Volandri leads the head to head on clay so may be close.

Update: Montanes won 6-1, 6-4.

Simon quit in his match with Federer with a neck injury. He is currently 1.51 against Gil who played reasonably well in his last match. Is Simon fully fit? Might be worth a lay.

Update: Gil had a few chances but Simon won 6-3, 6-4. No sign of injury for Simon.

Garcia-Lopez and Devvarman are at evens on Betfair. Devvarman has been in excellent form but hasn’t had much success on clay. G-L on the other hand is very comfortable on clay. I’d have to go with the claycourter but it will be tight.

Update: Tight first set but very one sided second. G-L won 6-4, 6-1.

Nishikori is looking like great value at 2.30 on Betfair. He is a very accomplished claycourt player. Andreev beat him in Indian Wells in 3 sets but i think its time for some revenge. Longer rallies will favour the Japanese player.

Update: Nishikori won 6-3, 6-3.
