Full schedule today with 44 main tour matches spread from 10am to 5am tomorrow. Everyone gets a chance to trade some tennis this week.
Laura Robson had a good run last week although collapsed mentally in the third set of her semi final. I think that would have drained her body and mind and she won’t stick around for long this week. She is up against Medina Garrigues. The Spaniard is vastly more experienced and is on her favourite surface but is also guilty of slow starts on a regular basis. Robson starts well and I will be laying Medina Garrigues at the start. Hopefully Robson takes the set and we can lay her on the way back in the second. MG to win in 3.
Update: Robson started well enough and won the first break. She wasn’t able to hold on for the set though.
Medina Garrigues won 6-4. 7-6.
Backing Gulbis is always a nervy thing to do. Brilliant one moment and then hitting simple balls 2 metres wide the next. Today he plays Volandri who in many ways is similar to Gulbis but without the talent. He has a toothless serve that should be punished if Gulbis’ dad has told him there’s no pocket money this week unless he tries his best. Gulbis has won both their previous meetings. 1.59 is asking for trouble though and I want 1.90+ before I click that mouse.
Update: Gulbis didn’t start well but had some luck to keep the set close. Volandri broke first but Gulbis came back to win the set in a tie break. Volandri took the second but it was Gulbis who progresses to the next round.
Gulbis won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Malisse has been in good form on the grass and should continue that on the hard courts of Atlanta. No Olympic distractions for him unlike his opponent Go Soeda. Soeda plays his best tennis on hard courts. He reached 4 Challenger finals winning 3 of them this year. Malisse is a class above those Challenger opponents though and I expect him to come through a very tight match.
Update: It was a tight match and Malisse took the opening set. However Soeda proved to be more consistent.
Soeda won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
