Yet another day away from my desk as we are driving the “kids” to Heathrow this evening to fly off to Cyprus for their honeymoon. I know you’re probably bored of wedding talk so hopefully that will be the end of it!
We had a lot of 3 set matches yesterday with some of them seeming to go on forever. The pattern of players being unable to close out games easily continued as the deuce count soared.
In recent weeks it has taken a big name opponent to defeat Hantuchova. Errani, Azarenka and Kvitova were all, unsurprisingly, too strong.
She starts as favourite at 1.56 against Erakovic who has also had a decent season so far. Once she got over the disappointment of losing to Cornet 10-8 in the final set of her first round match in Melbourne. she reached the quarter finals in Pattaya and the final in Memphis. She retired in that final and has lost both her matches since then. She was favourite in each of those matches.
Erakovic isn’t a million miles away from playing well but she must serve well today. I expect her to take a set from this match.
Neither player has played on clay for a while but as the Charleston courts are playing more like hard courts I don’t think that’s an issue.
I favour Hantuchova to get the win. Erakovic has beaten her before but I need to see some slightly better form from her before I will back her.
Update: Erakovic won 7-6, 6-4.
Laura Robson has played Cabeza Candela just once before which was in the qualifying rounds for the French open last year. She won in straight sets. Robson’s recent singles form has been poor and she has lost 5 of her lat 6 matches. However last week she reached the final in the women’s doubles in Miami. They lost the final but hopefully that run gave her back that winning feeling.
Cabeza Candela also played a final on Sunday. She lost in the final of the Osprey ITF event on clay so both players have had a similar amount of recovery time before today’s match.
Robson starts as favourite at 1.67 . I think she will get the victory today but I also feel we will be able to lay Candela below 1.70 during the first set.
Update: Robson won 6-2, 6-2.
