Predicting WTA in any detail is a bit like knitting fog…..
Laura Robson starts as favourite against Amanmuradova. She has played just one main draw match this year which was in the Australian Open. She won just 2 games against Jankovic. She had to go through the qualifying rounds there and came through all 3 rounds without losing a set.
Amanmuradova failed to reach the main draw at either the Brisbane event or the Australian Open.
Robson will need her serve to be at its best to justify her favourite tag. I can see this being a tight 3 setter.
Update: Robson quit at 2-5, first set. Bets void.
Morita v Mirza:
This should be fairly comfortable for Morita. Mirza’s movement is poor and she seems more at home on the doubles courts where she isn’t as exposed.
Mirza played well in the Fed Cup matches at the weekend and helped India win promotion. However playing 2 matches in one day won’t have helped her quad injury. She will be confident but I don’t think her body will be able to keep up with what her mind wants it to do.
Maybe 3 sets but Morita to come through.
Update: Some strange results so far today. Lots of breaks in this match. Morita took the first set but Mirza was the least bad player in the next 2 sets.
Mirza won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Martic v Arn:
Head to heads are 1-1 but both matches were on clay.
Martic’s form has been poor recently. She played Fed Cup last week and retired in her last match with blisters. On paper she is the better hard court player but Arn has had to come through qualification and so is used to the courts and conditions.
In her last qualification match Arn lost the first set but came back strongly to take it in 3 sets. She won’t be happy at the number of break point chances she gave her opponent but will also gain confidence at her ability to come back from a set down in 2 of the qualification rounds.
Probably a tight one and a good chance of 3 sets but Arn has the edge.
Update: Not the best match I’ve ever followed. Two close sets but it was Martic who came through.
Martic won 6-4, 6-4.
