US Open 2012 – Men’s Final

Murray v Djokovic:

Murray has had an up and down tournament. His form against Raonic was superb yet in the opening set and a half against Cilic he was awful. His experience and positive attitude turned things around as Cilic imploded. He coped well with bad weather conditions in his semi final with Berdych and looked solid.

Djokovic didn’t cope as well with the windy conditions and Ferrer took a 5-2 lead and won the opening set when the match resumed on Sunday. However Sunday’s weather was much calmer and Djokovic was able to control the match from that point although Ferrer put up a decent fight.

The players are quite closely matched. Head to heads are 8-6 in Djokovic’s favour and in 2012 they are 2-2. Murray won their last meeting on his way to Olympic gold.

The last time they played in a Slam was in January in the final of the Australian Open. That match went to 5 sets and really it was Djokovic’s greater mental strength that pulled him through 7-5 in the 5th set. Since then Murray has reached the final of Wimbledon and also won the Olympic title. He has shown a much improved attitude and self belief  in the big matches.

On a hard court Djokovic is rightly favourite but I feel 1.42 is nuts.

I think Murray has a great chance. It maybe depends a little on how much the “will Murray ever win a Slam” brigade prey on his mind. He seems to have  the self belief that he can compete with the biggest players on the biggest stages.

1.42 has to be a lay and I think he might just do this.

Update: He did it! So good to see a talented player actually believe in himself enough to play great tennis against a top player in a huge match. It was looking like Djokovic was going to pull off another amazing comeback but Murray broke early in the 5th set and won another break towards the end to take a little pressure off.

Next step would be for him to get some confidence in front of the media. He’s going to get a lot of practice!

Myrray won 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.

  1. Was delighted he did it, I was beginning to wonder if he would ever make it, despite in my view him being good enough to win a slam.

I usually stick up for him with the media, as for obvious reasons he doesn’t give much away after what happened with his Paraguay joke. But I have to say you have a point here, he must lack confidence, because I watched him talking on Sky afterwards with people he is seemingly comfortable with, Annabel Croft, Greg Rusedski and Marcus Buckland, and to say he didn’t cut the man of a person who had just won his first slam would be an understatement.

I can give him the benefit of the doubt and perhaps say he was shattered.
