US Open 2012 – week 1 Friday

It’s nice to sit down. I’ve been decorating the bedroom for the last 5 hours. I’m trying to get the office ready for next week and my wife is using that fact to get the bedroom decorated first. Anyone want to take bets on what time I fall asleep tonight?

Probably the biggest shock from yesterday was the 4 set win by Klizan over Tsonga. I wasn’t actually involved in the match at all as I thought it would be an easy one for the Frenchman but I did see part of the first set and Klizan seemed to be “doing a Rosol”. By that I mean he was hitting the ball incredibly hard and it was coming off.

Mardy Fish had to come back from 0-2 against Davydenko. Jack Sock beat Cipolla in straight sets in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

Cilic seemed to be cruising against Brands and had a 2 set lead. In the end he scraped through 7-5 in the 5th set.

Not too much drama in the WTA. Suarez Navarro took Radwanska to 3 sets although the third set was a bagel. Shvedova came so close to beating Vinci and served for the match in the third set. However Vinci won the next 3 games to take a great win.

Britain’s Jo Konta had an incredible start to her match with Govortsova and took a 4-0 lead in the opening set. She took the set but her game fell apart a bit in the second set. The third was closer but she narrowly missed out 5-7 in the deciding set.

Lots of low prices today but not too many that you’d expect to be overturned or even put under much pressure.

Will Tomic to be the last person to beat Andy Roddick on the main tour? The American announced that he will retire after the US Open. He says he isn’t healthy enough and not motivated enough. He’s never been one of my favourites as he has a heightened perception of his own importance especially in American events but you can’t deny that he has has a great career.

Roddick starts as favourite at 1.57 . Its difficult to know how his announcement will affect him. He might be distracted by it or it may free his mind from a lot of stress and he’ll be able to play freely. Personally I think its the latter and we will see a big serving performance from him. Tomic is unlikely to be able to deal mentally with the situation and the volume from the crowd in support of Roddick. I think he will be rattled.  Roddick to win in 4 sets.

Wawrinka has to be too low at 1.24 against Darcis. Last week Darcis beat Malisse, Istomin, and Roddick ( all in straight sets) and then took the opening set from Berdych. That has to be a lay for me. They have played twice before and although they were 4 and 8 years ago they went the distance each time.

Robredo looked good against Seppi in the first round winning in 3 sets. He starts as favourite against Leonardo Mayer at 1.67 in a match that looks nearer to 50/50 to me. I think this one is down to how well Mayer serves. If his serve is  firing then he has a great chance but without it Robredo has to better all round game and will come through.

I certainly don’t see this being over in 3 sets and if Mayer is serving well in the early games I will look to grab a decent lay price on Robredo.
