US Open 2012 – week 2 Wednesday

It wouldn’t be tennis without a rain delay this season! Something cropped up at home so i was kept away from the screens after 7pm. I didn’t expect Bartoli  to take a 4-0 lead against Sharapove. Del Potro and Roddick are in a tie break which isn’t a massive shock. Tipsarevic and Djokovic are both a break up in their matches.

Today sees the quarter final that I’m sure no one predicted between the 2 italian doubles partners Errani and Vinci.

Head to heads are 3-2 to Errani who has won their last 3 matches. All 3 were in straight sets although one was due to retirement early in the second set.

Vinci is in the form of her life and at 19th is just 1 place lower than her best ever ranking. Her recent victims have included A Rad, Cibulkova, Jankovic, Kerber and Ivanovic ( double bagel). You can’t help wondering when she will run out of energy.

These 2 players know each other game so well and i feel the starting price of 1.80 on Errani is value. They are both consistent but Vinci’s lack of anything other than a slice will be exploited by the player who knows her better than anyone. It will be tight but Errani will some through.

Update: Vinci was below the level I expected. Errani ran away with the first set and won an early break in the second. Vinci pulled the break back but Errani broke again and served out the match.

Errani won 6-2, 6-4.

Cilic has just 1 win over Murray  which was at the US Open in 2009 although Murray had a wrist injury. So it looks like it will be a win for the Scot but 1.13 is a lay price. Hopefully Cilic can do a Bartoli.

Update: Cilic DID do a Bartoli!  He took the opening set and took a 5-1 lead in the second set. Then Murray started to play better and Cilic allowed him back into the match. Murray came back to take the set in a tie break. Cilic fell apart after that.

Murray won 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-0.

The last 3 sets that Serena Williams has played she has won 6-0. Today’s opponent Ana Ivanovic has yet to win a set against the American in 3 matches.

Ivanovic has looked fairly solid in this tournament and she seems to have put the last tournament out of her mind where she was dumped out by Vinci without winning a game.

Williams needs to have a bad start to the match if Ivanivic is going to give us a morth worthwhile backing price. Stranger things have happened but I’m not sure Ivanovic has much of a chance if Williams is on her game today.

Update: Williams won 6-1, 6-3.

Federer leads 11-4 in the head to heads against Berdych. Since the start of 2010 they are 3-3. In those most recent 6 matches only once has Berdych failed to take a set.

Berdych has been serving well and has served himself out of trouble in previous matches. He faces one of the best hard court players of all time who hasn’t lost a set and had a walkover in the last round so will be well rested.

I can see Berdych taking a set and his best chance is perhaps the opening one. I will go with a small lay of Fed at the start but I am looking for  healthier price to move my position onto the world number 1.

Update: Berdych continued to play well and it was a bad day at the office for Fed.

Berdych won 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
