Two very different matches this evening.
First up is Serena Williams against Errani. Serena hasn’t had the toughest draw but has dealt with each opponent efficiently.
Errani was probably expected to lose to Kerber in the 4th round but came through in staight sets. She has lost just 1 set so far which was in the opening round against Muguruza Blanco.
The Betfair tennis stats say that they met in the London Olympics. They didn’t! They have played 3 times before and Williams has won each time. The most recent was in 2009.
Errani has had a great tournament but she just doesn’t have the game to trouble Williams. This will be very one sided. Serena can occasionally start badly but she seems very focused in this event so I aren’t hopeful of a higher price to back her.
Update: A quick andd easy win for Williams 6-1, 6-2.
Both Azarenka and Sharapova needed 3 sets to reach this semi final. Sharapova started badly against Bartoli and was 0-4 down before the rain delays started. Bartoli took the set but Sharapova fought back and was more consistent although it wasn’t a classy match.
Azarenka walked all over a nervous Sam Stosur in their opening set but she allowed the Aussie to fight back and the match went to a 3rd set which was settled in a tie break.
Azarenka leads the head to heads 5-4. In 2012 she leads 2-1 and even though took their last match it was on clay. Azarenka won both hard court matches this year.
The surface favours Azarenka but both players have allowed their levels to drop in their quarter finals. This will be close which suggests that 1.50 is too low.
I won’t be taking a position from the start but my prematch feeling is that Azarenka will come through so if I see over 1.80 I will take some.
Update: Tough match. Azarenka won 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
