Just some brief thoughts on the semi finals
17:00 – Djokovic v Nishikori
Nishikori was able to take advantage of a poor performance from Wawrinka in the quarter final. He won his second consecutive 5 set match. Not the ideal preparation for taking on Djokovic.
Djokovic had a tough quarter final himself against Murray who showed he is back in form but whose body began to let him down. He will feel he has an excellent chance of taking the title and may suffer from a few nerves.
Nishikori needs to start quickly. I said the same before his Wawrinka match and he was broken immediately but I don’t think he will get away with a similar start tonight.
It would need a super human effort to beat the world number 1 after two 5 setters but there is a chance Nishikori can take one of the early sets.
19:30 – Federer v Cilic
Looking at the stats Federer’s tactics against Monfils was serve and volley. His coach Edberg has been pushing him to use it more and it was very effective.
Having watched the highlights of Cilic’s match with Berdych I wouldn’t say Cilic played an amazing match but was made to look better by a really poor performance by Berdych.
Federer is one of the best players against big servers and Cilic needs another weapon if he is to beat Federer in a best of 5 grand slam semi final.
If he can serve well I see no reason why he shouldn’t take a set but even in a tournament full of surprises anything other than a Djokovic v Federer final seems unthinkable.
