We have a lot of short prices today but not all of them will coast into the next round. Finding which ones will struggle isn’t always easy but lets have a go.
WTA, 16:00 – Hantuchova v Cornet
Cornet starts at 1.31 against an opponent who has beaten her in their last 4 meetings. The most recent was in 2012 though.
Cornet has the better record on hard courts over the last 12 months and especially if we compare their performances against the same players. Her starting price is too low and we should see trading considerably higher.
Hantuchova has won just 2 of her 5 hard court matches since Wimbledon but they were against strong opposition.
Cornet has had similar luck since Wimbledon with just 2 wins.
Laying Cornet for a trade is an option or you could wait to lay her below 1.20 .
This is a tough one to call as far as the end result goes but I expect a few price swings.
ATP, 18:00 – Janowicz v Lajovic
The Winston Salem tournament took a lot out of those who went deep into last week. Rosol has said his body was destroyed and ended up losing weakly to Coric in straight sets. Lu had looked very strong last week but couldn’t take a set in his first round match. Querrey would normally have dealt easily with clay courter Maximo Gonzalez but needed 5 sets and was under pressure in all but the first set.
That suggest that last week’s runner up Janowicz will have some problems today. Is Lajovic the right person to take advantage of a weary performance from Janowicz though?
Lajovic has had a good season on the clay and reached the 4th round of the French Open. He hasn’t played a hard court match since Miami in March. He will obviously have been spending time on hard courts but there’s nothing quite like match play.
Janowicz was lucky enough to get an extra day’s rest to the other three semi finalists/finalists from last week and I expect him to start well before his legs start to feel heavy. Lajovic may also need a few games to find his timing.
Laying Janowicz when a break up or a set up seems like a decent plan for a trade. I think it could be a very close match. Janowicz may have enough left in the tank for 3 or 4 competitive sets but if it goes to 5 he could be in trouble.
WTA, 20:00 – Petkovic v Puig
Puig leads the head to heads 2-1 but they have played just once on a hard court. That was in Indian Wells last season. Puig won but Petkovic was just back from injury and was ranked 177th.
Petkovic had real problems in her first round match against 166th ranked qualifier Jabeur. She got out of jail to win the first set in a tie break but lost the second set 6-1.
She reached the semi final in Stanford but hasn’t been beyond the second round since.
This is Puig’s first time in the second round. She also needed 3 sets to get through her first round match and had to come back from losing the first set. She has not made it past the second round of any event since May.
if Puig plays aggressively and Petkovic again takes time t get going this could be a very entertaining match.
I will wait to back Petkovic when she is a break behind.
