WTA, 16:00 – Konta v Muguruza
Head to heads are 1-1. The most recent was this season on grass. Konta won in 3 sets. Both their matches went to 3 sets.
Since Wimbledon Konta has won 14 matches in a row. She won 2 ITF hard court titles and has come through the qualifying rounds at the US Open. It was an easy win for her in the last round.
Muguruza reached the final of Wimbledon but lost in the first round of her next two tournaments. She was comfortable in her 1st round match.
I favour Muguruza to win this as she can raise her game for the slams. I think it will be another close match though. Back Muguruza if she gets broken first.
ATP, 17:30 – Bedene v Young
Bedene won their only previous match. That was in 2012 on an indoor hard court and he won in 3 sets.
The 12 month hard court stats all favour Bedene. He got a break when Gulbis retired injured in their 1st round match. He has been very inconsistent lately with some great performances and some terrible ones. He beat Simon last week before winning just 3 games against Herbert.
Young has had some good matches recently and beat a below par Berdych in Montreal. He was 2 sets down against Simon in the 1st round but fought back to win in 5.
This is a tough one to call. Stats give Bedene the edge but home advantage helps Young.
I think we see at least 4 sets. Lay the set 1 winner. If pushed to pick a winner I’d go with Young.
ATP, 19:30 – Isner v Youzhny
Youzhny leads their previous meetings 2-0. The most recent was the 2010 US Open and he won in 4 sets. A lot has happened since then. Youzhny was the higher ranked player at 14th. He is now ranked 100. He is playing better tennis in the last couple of weeks in a season that has been his worst for a long time. He found some form 3 weeks ago in Montreal reaching the third round as a qualifier. He lost in the 1st round last year and made the quarter finals in 2013.
Isner under performs in the US Open but has still only failed to reach the 3rd round once (2008).
I won’t be surprised to see Youzhny take a set but unless Isner has a nightmare the American wins this. No value though at 1.24 . Back Isner if he loses the 1 set.
