Just had a quick look at my quarter finals predictions!
On the Womens side I got just 3 right. Serena, Kvitova and Halep.
A little better on the Mens with 4 correct and Tsonga as an outsider.
ATP, 18:30 – Tsonga v Cilic
Cilic leads their previous matches 4-3. He has won their last 3 meetings.
Cilic is defending champion but he hasn’t come close to the form he showed last year. The 12 month hard court stats slightly favour Cilic. The 3 month stats favour Tsonga.
Tsonga has not dropped a set so far. In 3 of his 4 matches he has not faced a break point. He faced 2 against Stakhovsky. He should be tested a little more today though Cilic is better known for his serve than for his return.
Cilic has had to work a lot harder. Two of his 3 sets in round 1 were tie breaks. He needed 5 sets to beat Kukushkin and 4 to beat Chardy. He has looked pretty shaky in his last 2 matches and will need to step up a level if he is to compete today.
Tsonga has spent a lot less time on court and has been very solid on serve. I favour him to get the win. Wait for a price nearer 2.00
WTA, midnight – S Williams v V Williams
Serena has won 5 of their last 6 matches. Venus won last year in the Rogers Cup semi final.
Serena holds all 4 grand slam titles at the moment. This week she has the chance to win all the slams in the same year. That hasn’t been done since Graff did it in 1988.
Will the pressure get to her? Yes I think it will. She is playing someone who knows her and her game inside out. If Venus is in with a chance of winning will she ease up to let her sister make history? There’s a lot of work to do after this match before Serena makes history. There has always been talk of them fixing matches between them. I’m not sure Venus will be in a position to choose whether she wins or loses but it will be interesting to watch if Venus takes set one and goes an early break up in the second!
I think we may see a slow start from Serena but she wins in 2 tight sets or maybe 3.
Back Serena if she gets broken and then Venus holds.
