WTA 16:00 – Kvitova v Pennetta
Head to heads are 3-3. Kvitova has won their last 3.
Pennetta usually does well at the US Open and she has shown again this year how much she loves this tournament. I thought Stosur may give her more problems than she did but Pennetta won in 2 tight sets. She only faced 4 break points in that match and saved them
Kvitova seems to be getting the balance right between less practise and rest to manage her Mono. She has not dropped a set so far. She has only been broken once which was in the 1st round.
I have to favour Kvitova but with Pennetta’s love of this venue we could see 3 sets.
Back Kvitova if she gets broken first.
WTA, 17:30 – Azarenka v Halep
Azarenka leads their previous meetings 2-0. Both were in 2012 and were won in 2 sets. That was before Halep made the improvements to her game and she started her rapid rise up the rankings.
Halep has had problems with her serve in this tournament (and recent tournaments). She is also having injury issues and took an MTO against Lisicki. She has had a day to recover but will it be enough? She was broken 7 times by Lisicki. She can expect Azarenka to put even more pressure on that weak second serve.
Azarenka has dropped just 1 set so far which was to Kerber. Her serve wasn’t great in the 2nd round and it came under a lot of pressure from Kerber but it was much more solid in the 4th round. She was broken just twice by Lepchenko. I think Azarenka’s strong ground strokes should work well against the Halep serve. Halep’s strength is her return and her movement but if the leg is still giving her problems that movement may be hindered.
Back Azarenka if she gets broken first.
