Many of the top players have had problems recently. Several top 20 players would not have got their ranking position with their current form. Also we have some lower ranked players who have really stepped up their performances and this could be one of the most open Opens for a few years.
So with that in mind it is difficult tp predict individual matched never mind try to work out who will still be around in the second week. I’ll have a go anyway 😉
Quite a strong section. We have both Williams Sisters, Radwanska, Pliskova, Bencic, Stephens and Keys. They could make a great tournament on their own!
Serena is set to meet Stephens in the third round. If she gets through that one then her 4th round opponent will be the winner of the Radwanska v Keys match. To get there Aggy Radwanska could meet her sister in the 2nd round.
The other half of this section will probably give us some interesting 3rd round matches. Bencic v Venus. Venus beat her easily in February but I think this time might be a different story. Bencic’s recent form has been stronger an she will go into that match with a lot more confidence.
Pliskova and Pavlyuchenkova could easily meet in the 3rd round. With Pav’s recent form that could be a close one but I’d have to favour Pliskova.
Predicted quarter final: Serena Williams v Bencic
Outsider with a chance: Pliskova
I find this section a little uninspiring to be honest!
Sharapova hasn’t played since her Wimbledon semi final which isn’t ideal preparation. She has a potentially tricky 1st round encounter with Gavrilova. A potential 3rd round meeting with Mladenovic who has raised her game this season will not be easy either. IF Sharapova gets through that one she could find Svitolina waiting for her in the 4th round. I have Sharapova making it to the quarter final but she will face so many bananaskin matches that if she is not at the top of her game she will be out in the first week.
Ivanovic is the top seed in the other half of this section but she will need to improve on recent performances if she is to take advantage of a fairly favourable draw. Van Uytvanck proved she can lift her game for the majors when she reached the quarter finals in the French Open. She will make Ivanovic work hard for a third round place. If she gets there Ivanovic should make it to the 4th round.
Vinci and Jankovic will probably meet in the third round. Jankovic will be favourite for that although Vinci is enjoying some excellent form. Vinci faces Suarez Navarro in the second round but on current form she should get past the Spaniard whose confidence must be at rock bottom.
Incidentally this section includes Britain’s Heather Watson. I can see her getting through her opening match but a 2nd round meeting with Makarova will probably be too much for her. Even if she does catch Makarova on a bad day she would get Vinci in the third round.
Predicted quarter final: Sharapova (IF on top form) v Jankovic
Outsiders with a chance: Svitolina, Ivanovic
Kvitova and Wozniacki are in this section.
Kvitova will play the final in new Haven on Saturday. A long week won’t help her energy levels and will affect the amount of training and practise she can put in between her US Open matches. Her first real test should not come until a 3rd round match with Schmiedlova. If Kvitova was to win that one I can’t see her having enough energy to beat Muguruza.
Petkovic might have something to say about Muguruza reaching the 4th round as they are set to meet in round 3.
Wozniacki has a tough draw as she tries to defend ranking points from her final appearance last year. She should be able to deal with Mchale in the 2nd round but Pennetta could give her a few problems in the next round.
Errani and Stosur are likely to battle it out to meet the winner of the Wozniacki v Pennetta match. I am going with Stosur.
Predicted quarter final: Muguruza v Wozniacki
Outsiders with a chance: Kvitova, Stosur (outsiders!!!)
This section has a few contenders. Safarova has found some form at the right time. She has 4th round points to defend. Pironkova may stand in her way if she reaches the 3rd round. Which of them reaches that 4th round will probably meet the winner of an Azarenka v Kerber third round clash.
The bottom half of the section has Halep probably taking on Cornet in the 3rd round. Her 4th round opponent will come from Giorgi, Lisicki or Bacsinszky, Lisicki and Giorgi meet in the 2nd round. I am going for Lisicki to beat Bacsinszky in the 3rd round.
Predicted quarter final: Azarenka v Halep
Outsiders with a chance: Safarova, Kerber
