US Open 2015 – Women’s Open Semi Finals

WTA, midnight – S Williams v Vinci

Williams leads their previous matches 4-0. The most recent being in August 2015 on a hard court. She won in 2 sets.

Vinci admitted herself that she has had an easy draw. Some big names were beaten early.  She did however play an excellent match to beat Mladenovic in the quarter final.

Serena was really tested by Venus in the last round. That was a perfect match to get her game fine tuned for the semi final and (if she gets there) the final. Williams was surprised by Vinci’s play in their recent meeting and will not be underestimating her today.

This really should be over in 2 sets.Serena often suffers from nerves just like any player and quite often we see her come close to losing the opening set when expected to win easily.

Back Serena if Vinci does get the 1st set. She failed to win a set in all their previous matches though so don’t hold your breath..

WTA, 01:30 – Pennetta v Halep

Pennetta leads their previous matches  3-1. The most recent was in March 2015 on a hard court. Halep won in 2 sets.

I didn’t expect this semi final. I thought Pennetta would take Kvitova to 3 sets but didn’t expect her to get the win. If Halep had been thought fit before her match with Azarenka I would have given her a great chance to win. She has had problems on serve and had an MTO in her match with Lisicki and I didn’t think she was fit enough to compete with Azarenka.

I am a little undecided on this match. Halep’s body will have taken a pounding in that tough 3 set quarter final. I will be surprised if she doesn’t call the trainer during this match.

Pennetta hasn’t beaten her since Halep rose up the rankings. Is this Pennetta’s final US Open? The rumour is that she will retire soon. She will want to go out with a bang.

I see this going to 3 sets. If Halep is healthy she has the greater recent experience of huge matches. Back Halep if she gets broken and then Penn holds or if she loses the first set.
