16:00 – De Bakker v Gicquel
Rankings are 53 and 166. Head to heads are 2-0 to Gicquel. They haven’t played since 2008.
A few months ago Gicquel was ranked just above the top 50. His form this season has been very poor and over the last 6 months he has won just 1 match from 9 on the main Tour.
De Bakker is steadily climbing the rankings are is perhaps the surprise of the season. He did well as a junior but hadn’t managed to transfer that success to the main ATP tour before this year.
Taking stats over the last 3 months they have held serve 90%/68% and hit 61%/55% of first serves in.
De Bakker converts 45% of break point chances compared to 32% from Gicquel.
Either back De Bakker on serve or back him from the start. If backing from the start make sure you have your strategy in place for if he goes behind.
I’d expect De Bakker to win in 3 sets but there’s an outside chance of 4 sets.
Update: De Bakker won 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
20:00 – Tipsarevic v Rochus
Rankings are 44 and 74. Head to heads are 4-2 to Rochus. Rochus has won their last 3 matches.
Tisarerevic has been is terrific form in the hardcourt leg of the tour. He did retire with an ankle injury in Toronto but I feel fatigue contributed to that retirement as he had played some long matches over the previous weeks in scorching hot temperatures.
Rochus has been poor and hasn’t even managed much success on the Challenger tour over recent weeks.
Neither player has a good record at the US Open but I expect Tipsarevic to make more of an impression this year.
Taking stats for the last 3 months they have held serve 87% and 76% of the time with first serve percentages of 56% and 62%. Tipsarevic wins 76% of points following a successful first serve.
I expect Tpisarevic to take the match although Rochus may well manage to win a set. Tipsarevic rarely keeps up the intensity for a full match and as this is best of 5 sets his mind may well go AWOL for a few games especially if he wins the first set.
Back Tipsarevic on serve.
Update: Tipsarevic did go AWOL but this time in the first set! He won 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, 6-2.
