Kanepi v Soler Espinosa:
The Spaniard has played just 1 match since the French Open. She beat Date Krumm who was possibly hindered by a fracture in her left hand.
Kanepi hadn’t played since Wimbledon but came through her first round match in straight sets. She has the game most suited to the hard courts.
Kanepi won their only previous meeting which was a couple of years ago and on clay.
Soler Espinosa won her qualifying matches in straight sets and has a chance today but Kanepi has a stronger serve and better stats on return of serve. Kanepi also reached the quarter finals last year so has points to defend.
Kanepi starts as favourite on Betfair and I expect her to win this. However I would like a better price than 1.45 so I will be waiting for a higher entry early in the first set. Anything over 1.80 is attractive. (1.45)
Update: Not good from Kanepi. Soler Espinosa won 6-4, 6-2.
Haas v Falla:
Neither player has had much success on the hard courts before this week. Falla surprised everyone with a 5 set win over Troicki. Haas’ losses in the last couple of weeks have been 3 setters to Bellucci and Monaco which is nothing to be ashamed of.
Former world number 2 Haas leads the head to heads 3-1 with all the matches being on hard courts.
If Falla isn’t in the right frame of mind then he can be awful on hard courts and his loss to Bellucci 6-0, 6-1 still sticks in my mind. He was also cramping up a little towards the end of his match with Troicki although has had a couple of days to recover.
I expect Haas to start better and if he can hold on then he will get the win. He has the stronger serve.
They start quite even on the markets with Falla slight favourite at 1.88 . Part stake lay on Falla from the start for me with a view to managing the position in play. (1.88/2.12)
Update: Haas won 7-6, 6-1, 7-5.
King v Gajdosova:
Gajdosova is the classier player and King is more a doubles player. However Gajdosova can sometimes self destruct! Before her first round match she had lost the previous 5 on hard courts so it was perhaps to be expected that is would be a little untidy. However she found a way to win in straight sets. Hopefully that will help her confidence.
King came through her first round quite comfortably against Greta Arn but has also been in poor form. Her serve is very weak at just 55% of service games held.
Its time Jarmilla found some form and I am banking on her doing so today. She starts as slight favourite at 1.72 and whilst it could well be 3 sets I expect her to come through. (1.72)
Update: Hard to describe that pathetic performance from Gajdosova. King won 6-2, 6-0. Even for WTA that was an incredibly bad performance from a so called favourite.
