16:00 – Gasquet v Monfils
Rankings are 38 and 19. Head to heads are 2-2.
Gasquet really couldn’t have played much better than he has so far. He hasn’t lost a set in this tournamemnt.
Monfils surprised me in the last round. I didn’t expect that performance from him and even though he was distracted by Tipsarevic’s hamstring injury he showed that he is serious about doing well in the last major of the year.
Even though Monfils’ attitude has been improved over the last week its really hard to back him. He is packed full of talent. He has a huge serve, he can run forever and can hit some amazing shots but he just doesn’t do it week in, week out.
Gasquet seems more composed and a lot more consistent. He used to have a reputation as a “choker” but I think he has grown up a lot since his alleged drugs incident. Add a more mature head to the amazing tennis talent he possesses and the result can be spectacular.
Looking at the stats from the last month they hold serve 85% and 83%. Gasquet wins more points on second serve than Monfils.
Gasquet creates more break point chances but Monfils converts a higher percentage of those chances.
Very difficult to pick a winner but if pressed I would favour Gasquet.
Back both on serve.
Update: Poor performance from Gasquet. His first serve just wasn’t working and that allowed Monfils to do just enough to win.
Monfils won 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.
19:00 – Kenepri v Wickmayer
Rankings are 32 and 18. Head to heads are 2-1 to Kanepri.
This one looks like it should be close ( as you’d expect at this stage of a Grand Slam). One thing that is sadly lacking in WTA games is consistency. Players can hold to love one game and then hit 2 double faults in the next and get broken.
Of these two players Kanepi is the more consistent. Her recent form has been much more impressive. She isn’t always the quickest around the court though and Wickmayer will give her more problems than Jankovic did yesterday as she hits the ball flatter.
Stats on serve are quite good for the WTA with them holding serve 68% and 69% and first serve percentages of 64% and 70%. Its their second serves that are their weakness with them winning 42% and 48% of points.
Could well be a three setter but my money is on Kanepi.
Laying the server (edited from earlier – I’m an idiot), especially on second serve is an option. Also scalping and 15-40.
Update: You couldn’t get 3 more different sets! Wickmayer ran away with the first 6-0. Kanepi just couldn’t get going and looked like she was going out of the tournament.
The second set was much closer and was taken to a tie break which Kanepi won. Kenepi then completed the voctory with a 6-1 score in the final set.
