A quick message to service subscribers. Most people are getting the emails with no problems but a small number aren’t. The picks for the tips  and the Wins a Set are on the relevant subscriber pages on the blog. Check your spam folders for the emails and fingers crossed it sorts itself by tomorrow. Nothing has changed at my end as far as I know.

We are witnessing some dire tennis this week. If it was consistently bad it would be ok but players are ranging from amazing passes to dumping simple volleys into the net from 5 feet away. Certainly reduced stakes are advisable this week or at least until we get rid of the dross.

Martic beat Hradecka the last time they played although that was 2 years ago.

Since losing to Cornet in the final in Strasbourg Hradecka hasn’t won a main draw match. She has only won a single set in the 5 matches since that final.

Martic has enjoyed a little more success than that. After wnning the ITF event in Nottingham she reached the 3rd round at Wimbledon. Second round exits in main tour events are the norm for her. In her last match she took Sloane Stephens to 3 sets in Cincinnati having knocked out URad and Torro Flor in the qualifying rounds.

Hradecka has a big serve when she is playing well and at some point she will return to form. The trouble is that without her serve she has very little to trouble opponents. I’d expect Martic to take this one but I think she will trade nearer evens at some point.

I’ll back Martic if Hradecka manages to get an early break.

Update: Martic won 6-4, 7-6.

I think Garcia will give McHale a bit of a scare today. I was quite impressed with her last 2 matches.

Update: McHale won 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Hercog has had some good results on hard courts recently. She crushed defending champion Flipkens in the first round. She beat Cubulkova in Cincinnati and took Errani to 3 sets.

She doesn’t have a good record on indoor hard courts but if her serve works as well as it did yesterday I don’t see Coin having much chance against her. 1.30 is a little tight though as anything can happen in WTA so I will be waiting for at least 1.50 to 1.60 .

Update: Hercog won 6-0, 6-2.

Surely no one is staying up until 2am to trade Zahlavova Strycova v Erakovic?

Erakovic has the better serve but BZS is better on return. Erakovic had a good summer with 3rd rounds at both the French Open and Wimbledon but her form more recently has been sporadic. If she has a poor day from the service line then BZS is more than capable of taking advantage. I think Zahlavova Strycova can keep this one close and don’t be surprised to see 3 sets.

Update: Not close at all! Erakovic won 6-2, 6-1.
