Kirilenko and Vesnina always have tight matches. Kirilenko starts as a strongish favourite on Betfair at 1.60. Vesnina has shown some respectable form lately and reached the third round in China.
Kirilenko is back from a short injury break and went out in the first round in China in straight sets to Makarova. I think its worth a lay on Kirilenko if her price drops below 1.30 .
Update: Kirilenko’s price hit 1.35 quite early. Vesnina broke and served for the set at 5-4. She was broken and Kiri went on to take the set.
Kirilenko won 7-5, 6-1.
Bartens starts as a strong favourite at 1.47 against Keothavong. Keo has won both their previous encounters in straight sets. Both matches were last year. Bartens was ranked in the 190’s then though and is now at number 60.
Even so I think 1.47 is just too low and I will be laying. I’d expect Anne to cock up any chance of victory so its a lay to back trade.
Update: Keothavong took the first set and I traded out. I didn’t expect such an easy win!
Keothavong won 6-2, 6-2.
Rybarikova and Dominguez Lino are quite closely matched. Rybarikova starts as slight favourite but I am favouring Lino. She started very badly yesterday though so I will wait for a lower price on Rybarikova. They have only played once before which was on a clay court in 2008. Lino took that in straight sets. Lino has improved her hard court game in the last 12 months and I think Rybarikova could have problems with Lino’s awkward style of play. She also never gives up which is always a bonus when you have money on someone.
Update: Lino won 6-2, 6-3.
Melzer’s form has been up and down for many months now. He retired in Kuala Lumpur with no apparent injury and as we are getting very close to the end of the season he is one player whose motivation is suspect.
Muller hasn’t managed to string 2 wins together for a few weeks but his serve has kept his matches close. He had a good win in 3 sets over Darcis in the last round so he is more used to the conditions than Melzer.
I’ll be laying Melzer in this one.
Update: Muller took a 3-0 lead in the first set. Melzer pulled back to 3-3 and then lost the next 3 games and the set! melzer took set 2 but Muller won the third in a tie break.
Muller won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
