Wednesday 18th July

Very few of today’s starting prices offer much in the way of value.

Ramos starts as favourite against Rosol. Rosol came through to win against troicki ina  match I felt Troicki was controlling. No stream for it though so it wasn’t possible to see whether he won it or Troicki lost it. Ramos reached the quarter finals last week although he only had to win 1 match to get there and he easily beat Andujar yesterday.

In the second set against Andujar Ramos was broken 3 times which doesn’t look good for his match today. Rosol’s serve seemed more solid and I think that will be the difference today. Rosol at 2.20 looks a good pick to me.

Update: The market was going crazy in the first few games and when Rosol had a break point I closed the trade. In the end Ramos took teh set in a tie break. He also went into a 4-1 lead in the second set before Rosol rattled off 5 games in a row.

Ramos won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Youzhny leads the head to heads with Bellucci 3-0 including a 3 set win on clay in Rome in May.  Bellucci starts as favourite on Betfair at 1.76 and is perhaps the better clay courter of the two but this will be a close match. other than his straight sets loss to Nadal at Wimbledon Bellucci has spent the last few months exclusively on clay. Youzhny has spent his time since the French Open on grass where he reached the semi fnals in Germany and the Quarter finals at Wimbledon. He may need a few games to make the transition to clay. Bellucci to edge this in 3 sets.

Update: First blood went to Youzhny as he took the opening set with a single break seperating them. Bellucci levelled at 1-1 and went on to win a nervy third set.

Bellucci won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Scheepers and Lepchenko seem fairly evenly matched. Scheepers reached the quarter finals last week losing to Serena. She beat Vandeweghe in the first round.

Lepchenko may have one eye on the Olympics but there’s no reason why she wouldn’t be giving everything here. However even though she is on “home” soil I am favouring Scheepers. She has better stats on return of serve and leads the head to heads 3-1 although they haven’t played for 3 years.

Update: An almost faultless match from the service line for Lepchenko just didn’t give Scheepers much hope. There was just 1 break in the first set which saw Lepchenko take it. In the second  set the pressure got to Scheepers and her serve was taken apart.

Lepchenko won 6-4, 6-2.
