Wednesday 22nd May 2013

So we had no play in Brussels yesterday despite them having indoor courts available. We have a new schedule for today with a 9am start. Lets see if it happens. We are going to have players with 2 matches in the same day although chances are they will play someone in the same situation! Maybe they will settle it with rock, paper, scissors. Its hard to know how the delays will affect players but are they really going to give 100% and risk exhausting themselves before one of the biggest tournaments of the season?

The over all standard yesterday was dire. Plus both tips lost! I was glad to see the back of Tuesday.

I’m sure Tipsarevic feels he has a chance of doing well next week. He is the only one who thinks that but maybe he has been reading his tattoos.  Pella was very solid against Kubot and I feel he will keep this one close today. 1.33 on Tipsarevic is too low.

Update: Pella won 7-6, 6-1.

Oprandi is as capable of a sulk as anyone and she won’t be happy if she ends up playing 2 matches in a day. She may have to get the bandages out! If she decides to try today against Oudin then she looks a decent price at 1.55 . Oudin has shown a little form recently but she’s still Oudin.

Update: Oprandi won 6-2, 6-2.

Doi was very solid from the service line in her win over Pliskova. Today’s opponent Hsieh starts as a strong favourite at 1.45 but I think it will be much closer than the price suggests. Hsieh has been unlucky with recent draws that put her against the likes of Kerber, A Rad and Stosur. She beat Beck in the last round in 3 sets. I can see this going to 3 sets  too.

Update: Doi won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

The top French players are in a tricky situation this week. They want to be fresh for the best of 5 format next week but they are also in front of a home crowd this week in Nice.

Simon has a “losable” match against Rufin who took him to 3 sets in their only previous encounter.  Monfils is up against Fognini. Both players will feel they can do well next week . I was surprised that Monfils fought back yesterday when Giraldo took the opening set. Maybe I was seeing things that weren’t there but he appeared to be discreetly throwing that set and was feeling his ankle a few times. He was stretching his back at changeovers. I had to leave that match after the first set and was amazed to see he won the match.

Anyone winning today won’t be getting to RG before Friday which doesn’t give long to recharge the batteries. Should be an interesting evening session.
