Gulbis v Darcis:
Gulbis came through his match with Falla much easier than I thought. Falla faded badly in the second set and it ended 6-1.
Darcis was 1-4 down in the first set of his match with Troicki but came back to win it 6-4. They shared the next 2 sets with just a break between them in each.
They have never played before.
Gulbis won this event in 2010 beating Karlovic in the final. He had a poor season in 2011 and didn’t play this tournament but he must like conditions there.
This is the first time that Darcis has been beyond the first round. He has the game to keep it competitive and if Gulbis has a bad day as he often does then the Belgian will fancy his chances. Darcis is the higher ranked player having improved over 70 paces in the last 12 months.
Dulbis starts at 1.69 . I will be waiting to see how he starts but slightly favour him to get the win. Conditions suit him and he will have good memories from 2010.
Update: Gulbis took an early lead but managed to throw it away. The set went to a tie break that Darcis won. Gulbis easily took the next 2 sets.
Gulbis won 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Andujar v F Mayer:
They have played 3 times before, all on clay, and Mayer leads the head to heads 2-1. He won their only meeting in 2011 which was in the final in Bucharest.
They both won their first round matches in straight sets. Andujar came through against an inform Leonardo Mayer. I’m not sure he can complete the Mayer double today.
Andujar has never been beyond the first round until this year although technically neither has Mayer as its his first visit.
If Mayer is now back to match fitness then he is a very strong favourite to take the match. He always makes me a little nervous though and I would be happier getting him at nearer 1.70 at least.
Update: Mayer soon went a break down and i layed Andujar at around 1.9 . Mayer broke back and I exited the trade. I didn’t follow the match after that but Mayer took the set. Andujar took the next 2 sets to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
