16:00 – Wawrinka v Almagro
Rankings are 26 and 16. Head to heads are 2-1 to Wawrinka.
Both are decent servers and hold serve 84% and 86% of the time over the last 3 months. In fact all their stats are very similar. Almagro has played more tennis recently but most of it was on clay.
Wawrinka pushed Nadal close last week. He is more suited to hard courts but if Almagro can get his great backhand going then he has a chance today.
Both should be fine to back on serve although I recommend watching the opening couple of games to see if one player is having an offday or a slow start.
Wawrinka has the edge for me.
Update: Wawrinka won 6-3, 6-3.
22:00 – Melzer v Giraldo
Rankings are 15 and 62. They haven’t played before.
Melzer will have been disappointed to go out of the Rogers Cup in the first round. He has now had plenty of time to rest and get his head together and I expect him to come out strong for this match.
Giraldo has lost in the first round of the last 3 tournaments. He prefers clay courts and I think he is out of his league with today’s opponent.
Melzer holds serve 85% of the time to Giraldo’s 81%. Giraldo’s stats against first serves are poor with him winning just 21% of points.
Melzer will look to start fast to get this match over with quickly. He’ll be hoping for a good run this week as preparation for the US Open.
Back Melzer on serve or from the start.
Update: Melzer won 6-1, 6-4.
