Western & Southern Financial Group Masters – Wednesday

16:00 – Ferrer v Querrey

Rankings are 11 and 21. Head to heads are 1-0 to Querrey.

Ferrer had a scare in the last round at the hands of Dolgopolov. He lost the opening set but totally dominated the next 2 sets. Querrey had a good win against Petzschner in straight sets. Since he won the Farmers Classic at the start of the month he hasn’t had much success.

Both are strong on serve and hold 81% and 86% of the time. Querrey has the bigger serve and will hope to get a  lot of quick points from that.

Ferrer returns better than his opponent and really attacks second serves. He wins 55% of points against second serves. He also converts more break points that Querrey.

Querrey starts as slight favouriet but I think it will be Ferrer who takes it. I expect him to grind Querrey down and once he gets to grip with the American’s first serve he will start to dominate.

In the first set backing both on serve should be fine. Qurrey’s big serve and inability to return consistently may give us a tie break.

Update : Ferrer won 7-5, 6-2.

18:00 – Kohlschreiber v Falla

Rankings are 33 and 67. Head to heads are 1-0 to Kohlschreiber.

Kohlschreiber took the first set from Nadal in last week’s Rogers Cup quarter final.

Falla has had limited succes recently although beat Monfils in straights sets in the last round. Monfils is below his best due to injury and wasn’t at all interested in that game.

Going on recent form I give Kohlschreiber the edge here. He has the bigger serve and the more aggressive style. The first set could be close but if it goes Kohlschreiber’s way then the second set could be over very quickly.

Back Kohlschreiber on serve.

Update: Kohlschreiber raced away with the first set 6-0. As predicted the second set WAS over quickly but it went to Falla 6-1. Kohlschreiber won the decider to take the match 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.
