Western & Southern Financial Group Womens Open – Final

20:00 – Clijsters v Sharapova

Rankings are 7 and 15. Head to heads are 4-3 to Clijsters. Sharapova has won their last 3 matches.

In all their previous meetings the player winning the first set has gone on to win the match.

Clijsters has perhaps had the easier route to the final and certainly had the easier semi with Ivanovic retiring after just 3 games of the first set.

Their first serve percentages are close at 65% and 66%. Clijsters wins fewer points on her first serve but more on her second. She holds serve 86% of the time to Sharapova’s 77%.

Sharapov’a match finished at 11:30pm  local time and she is due on court at 3pm. She has played 100 games this week compared to 60 by Clijsters. That could well be a factor today even though Sharapova is younger.

Clijsters converts more break point opportunities.

Clijsters started slowly against Pennetta but I expect her to be more focused today. Sharapova came through the three setter with Pavlyuchenkova but was helped by the double faults by her opponent.

Clijsters to take it in 2 tight sets.

Scalping or 15-40 will work well. Clijsters will go after Sharapova’s serve in the opening couple of games so backing Kim against serve is an option.

Update: Sharapova was up a set and 5-3 when the match was interrupted. Clijsters handled the break better and came back to win the match 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.
