Wimbledon 2012 – Women’s Draw

Since 2000 the winner has come from the Williams family 9 times from 12 years. Serena has the chance to equal Venus’ 5 wins.

I don’t think Kvitova will defend her title and it would be nice to see a new name on the trophy this year. Azarenka seems to have a few issues mentally at the moment. Stosur should be able to get better results than she does on grass as she has a great game for the surface Li Na and obviously Sharapova will fancy their chances. Personally if anyone other than Serena wins it I will be happy.

The first section is headed by Sharapova. Other contenders include Kerber who is likely to meet Makarova again in the second round. The winner of that one is likely to come up against McHale who was in great form last week.

Barthel’s mental frailty comes up against constantly injured Zvonareva in the first round. That won’t be pretty ( in more ways than one).

Shara’s route to the quarter finals is likely to include games against Foretz Gacon and Lisicki. An outside chance that Lisicki could be replaced by Martic.

Kerber and McHale will meet in the 3rd round with Kerber being my pick to go through.

Clijsters and Jankovic meet in the first round. Was Clijsters’ withdrawal from her semi final last week purely a precaution? If she is fit she should beat JJ. The winner of their match will progress to play Kerber for a quarter final spot.

Probable quarter final is Sharapova v Kerber.

Section 2 has some big names. Agnieszka Radwanska meets Venus in the second round. Stosur needs a good start and should get past Rus in round 2 and probably Peng in the third.

Petrova and Oudin should have a decent battle in the second round. The winner will  play Pennetta in the third round for the honour of meeting A Rad for a place in the quarter final.

Na Li and Kirilenko could be a decent match with the winner taking on Stosur.

Probable quarter final is A Rad v Li.

Section 3 has defending champion Kvitova and many people’s favourite Serena Williams. Serena’s potential opponents are likely to be Zheng and either Errani or Safarova ( Errani is most likely).

Kvitova has a virtual bye in round 2 against Baltacha. She will play the winner between Pavlyuchenkova and Lepchenko which could see a bit of an upset.

Cibulkova and Schiavone are likely to meet in the third round. Cibs has dropped her level a little and Schiavone has upped hers so that could be a close one. Slight edge to Cibulkova for me.

Probable quarter final is Serena Williams v Cibulkova.

Section 4 looks a tricky one with many players who can turn on the style on grass. Azarenka has a very difficult path to the quarter finals and I don’t think she will make it. If Begu or Halep don’t take her down Ivanovic will in the 4th round.

Wozniacki has a fair chance of making the quarter finals. Cornet has found some of her old form and they meet in round 2. Kunetsova will probably be Wozniacki’s third round opponent and you never know what you’re going to get from her.

I think Ursula Radwanska has a chance of beating Vinci in round 2 which could set up another match with Bartoli. Thats if Bartoli reaches that stage and how serious her leg injury is.

I expect Ivanovic to reach the 4th round but she won’t have it easy with Bondarenko in the second round and perhaps Goerges in the third.

Probable quarter final is Wozniacki v Ivanovic.
