Wimbledon 2015 – Saturday, week 1

ATP Wimbledon, 13:30 -Tsonga v Karlovic

Head to heads are 1-1. Both matches were on grass. Karlovic won at Wimbledon in  2009 in 4 sets and Tsonga won in a Challenger in 2007 in 2 sets.

Tsonga struggled in the first round against another big server, Muller. He needed 5 sets. He was much more comfortable against Ramos in the last round.

Karlovic has been enjoying the grass this season. He beat Berdych and took Federer to 2 tie breaks in Halle. he beat Dolgopolov in the last round in 5 sets.

I expect Tsonga to be able to put his serve under more pressure today but if Karlovic has a top level day from the service line he is tough to beat. He does continue to struggle in tie breaks though! 4 from 10 on grass this year.

Back Tsonga if Karlovic takes set 1. This should be at least 4 sets.

ATP Wimbledon, 15:00 – Ward v Pospisil

Ward leads  1-0. That match was in 2011 on a hard court and he won in 2 sets.

Ward has taken advantage of Ferrer withdrawing. He wouldn’t have beaten the Spaniard. He has come through both rounds in 4 sets and was underdog in his last one.

Pospisil struggled against Millot and I thought he would have problems with his back after a 5 set match. Fognini was poor though in the second round and I knew my tip was doomed when he had a code violation after just 3 games. Pospisil served at a high level though to be fair.

I favour Pospisil for the win today but Ward will push him close. Ward only had 1 main draw win at Wimbledon before this week and he is in danger of getting a nose bleed if he makes the 4th round.

Back Pospisal if Ward goes an early break up or if Ward takes the opening set. Tie breaks looks Wards best hope.
