Wimbledon – week 2, Women’s Quarter Finals

Just the four games today. Pity they aren’t spread out rather than 2 at 1pm and 2 at 3pm…

Kvitova v Pironkova

Pironkova beat Venus Williams in straight sets for the second Wimbledon in a row. Williams was never really in the match and her poor second serve and all those unforced errors made Pironkova’s job fairly straight forward. She also knocked out number 2 seed Zvonareva in straight sets. She has yet to lose a set.

Kvitova has also not lost a set yet and only an in form Vinci was able to win 3 games in a set against her.

Both players are trying to reach the semi finals for the second consecutive year. Kvitova leads the head to heads 2-0 but there’s something that Pironkova likes about the conditions at Wimbledon and she is playing great tennis.

1.34 seems too low when this really should be a close match. Pironkova is likely to take a set. Lets hope its the first one! I’ll be laying Kvitova from the start.

Update: Kvitova won 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.

Lisicki v Bartoli

Bartoli has had 3 really draining matches in a row so her energy levels could be on the low side.

Lisicki’s big serve wasn’t quite firing in her last match but she will be needing it today. She starts as slight favourite on Betfair which is probably about right. This will be a very close match and its hard to pick a winner without seeing how they start.

Bartoli should have the edge and her game and experience ought to be enough to get the job done. However I think Lisicki is going to be the fitter of the 2 players and if this goes the distance she seems to be better equiped to deal with it.

I expect Bartoli to run out of steam and Lisicki to win in 3 sets.

Update: The first 3 games were breaks of serve which saw Lisicki ahead. She held her serve for the rest of the set to go 1-0 up. In the second set she again won a break and was serving for the match at 5-4 but the nreves gt to her and she was broken. The set went into a tie break which bartoli took. In the third set Lisicki got off to a fast start and was soon 3-0 up. She held on against a tiring bartoli to win 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

Cibulkova v Sharapova

Cibulkova knocked out Wozniacki in 3 sets. She has also beaten Sharapova in their last 2 matches although both were on clay.

Sharapova needs her serve to be at its best today and she may be helped by the weather. Its not a good forcast and the organisers may be forced to play safe and have the roof closed on Centre Court. This will save Sharapova from having to deal with any wind which seems to affect her more than most other players especially on her serve.

You have to consider Sharapova is favourite but 1.29 looks way too low. She is capable of a slow start and Cibulkova will be full of confidence after her win yesterday.

I’ll lay Sharapova from the start but won’t be looking to be too greedy. I expect her to win so if she gets broken I’ll be switching onto her.

Update: Easy win for Sharapova 6-1, 6-1.

Paszek v Azarenka

This could be the most one sided of the matches today. With some of the big names going out Azarenka must feel she has a reasonable chance of taking the title.

Azarenka starts at 1.14 which is obviously no price to be backing at but I’m not sure I want to lay either. Paszek’s win over Schiavone shouldn’t be ignored but I just don’t see this being much of a contest.

Update: Azarenka won 6-3, 6-1.
