Wimbledon – Week 2 – Women’s Semi Finals

13:00 – Zvonareva v Pironkova.

Rankingsa are 21 and 82. Head to heads are 1-0 to Pironkova.

Pironkova beat Venus Williams surprisingly easily in the quarter final and has yet to lose a set in these championships. She has also taken out Bartoli, Kulikova and Dushevina en route to the semi final.

Zvonareva beat Clijsters in three sets in the quarter final coming back from a set down. She had an easy 4th round match against an unfit Jankovic who retired in the second set but has also beaten Wickmayer here. The set against Clijsters is the only one she has lost.

Zvonareva has been serving extremely well with a first serve percentage of 67%. She has been winning 78% of points following a successful first  serve.

Pironkova, whilst playing some great shots against Williams was really handed the match by the American’s unforced errors. However she kept her cool and has done exceptionally well to get to this point.

Zvonareva had to come back from a set down against Clijsters although the Belgian was also below par and made that task a little easier. If Zvonareva serves as well today and is as aggressive as she was in the quarter final then she should reach the final.

When the two players met in their only previous meeting Zvonareva was in poor form. Her service was terrible and she was winning just 19% of points on her second serve.

I expect Zvonarave to take the match. Scalping and 15-40 are good ways to trade it. If Zvonareva serves and holds well then she can be backed on serve.

Update: Pironkova started very well and managed to break to 15. She held on to take the set.

In the second set Zvonareva started to get on top and took the set. The third set was closer than the score suggests but Zvonareva took it to reach the Final.

Zvonareva won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

15:00 – Serena Willimas v Kvitova

Rankings are 1and 62. Head to heads are 1 -0 to Williams.

Both players have had tough routes to the semi final. Kvitova came through a great match against Kanepi winning 8-6 in the final set. Williams had a hard match against Li but came through in straights sets. She has yet to lose a set in these championships.

Both women are serving well but Williams has the better stats. First serve is at 67% to Kvitova’s 61% and points won on first serve are 89% to 70%.

Both have also returned very well with the stats pretty much even.

Kvitova was asked after her quarter final win over Kanepi if she thought she could beat Serena to reach the final. She replied, “No”. Maybe she is trying reverse psychology but she needs to start this match believing she has a chance. If she can play the way she has done so far then she does have an outside chance but Williams is in great form especially on serve.

As Williams starts at 1.09 then its well worth laying her from the start but I just dont see Kvitova winning this one. I’ll be cheering her on though as she has played some very entertaining tennis here. If you ge the chance to back Williams at a higher price then take it.

Update: Kvitova started well and did manage to break. However Williams soon broke back. The set went to a tie break and Williams took it.

The second set was pretty one sided although Kvitova put up a good fight.

Williams won 7-6, 6-2.

I didn’t really get involved in the game with just a £7 profit.
