Wimbledon – Women’s Final

Kvitova v Sharapova

They have played once before which was on a hrd court lasst year. Sharapova won that in straight sets.

Sharapova showed in her semi final against Lisicki that experience can mean a great deal in the big matches. Lisicki couldn’t handle the occasion whereas Sharapova had been there before.

Kvitova started her semi final superbly and took the opening set 6-1. Maybe she then started to think about the final and allowed Azarenka to get back into the match. She managed to get her head back on the current match in the third set and took it easily.

Kvitova has the stronger serve and Sharapova needs to reduce the number of double faults. Kvitova cvan perhaps generate more power on the ground strokes but is more likely to lose points through unforced errors.

This should be a great match to watch although I’d turn the sound down if I were you. Sharapova has the greater experience on the big stage and knows what it takes to win Wimbledon. I feel that will be the fact that devides them at the end and Sharapova will be champion but I also feel its very likely that she trades a lot higher than her starting price of 1.63 so a lay at the start is a good option. Sharapova often starts slowly so Kvitova needs to get that early break. If she doesn’t then she could have missed her chance as Sharapova will get stronger as the game progresses.

I’d be surprised if this is over in straight sets.

Update: Kvitova being broken in the first game was a little unexpected although as I expected Sharapova to struggle in her first service game I layed again after the break in the first game. As I also expected Sharapova to come back in the second set I hedged out after the first. I was happy with that and just sat back to watch the rest of the match. Sharapova’s serve wasn’t great in the second set but was an improvement to the first set. Kvitova wasn’t making many errors until she was a  break up in the second set. Then Sharapova almost pulled her back but just couldn’t consolidate her break of serve.

Kvitova won 6-3, 6-4.
