So are these the players we expected to be in the semis? Obviously Federer was fairly certain the way he’s been playing. Djokovic, Nadal and Murray were weakened by injuries and ilness but we shouldn’t tale anything away from Ferrer, Tsonga and Berdych.
Ferrer beat both Djokovic and Murray. Berdych beat ferrer and Tipsarevic and only lost to Djokovic in a third set tie break. Tsonga beat Nadal and Fish and only lost to Federer in 3 sets.
Federer v Ferrer:
Head to heads is 12-0 to Federer. Away from the clay courts Ferrer has only taken a single set from Fed in 8 matches.
I said in an earlier post that Federer’s biggest enemy at the moment seems to be boredom. He has to come into this match with the 12-0 H2H thinking that he is going through to the final. If he wins the first set easily then Ferrer is in with a chance of taking the second. When his opponent has levelled the match it gives Federer something to work on and recently he has been able to take that third set fairly comfortably.
Will Ferrer believe he can beat Federer today? He will fight all the way but I just don’t think he has the fire power to take 2 sets today so i am staying with federer to get the place in the final.
He starts at 1.11 but if Fish was able to take the match to three sets then it has to be a real possibility that Ferrer will do the same. The starting price is a cheap lay and whilst I expect federer to take the first set there is ofcourse a chance that he won’t. If Fed takes the first set I will be laying again at around 1.03 .
Update: No broedon for Fed today.
He won 7-5, 6-3.
Berdych v Tsonga:
Berdych leads the head to heads 2-1 although Tsonga’s win was due to a withdrawal by Berdych.
Tsonga starts as favourite on the exchanges which seems reasonable given his win over Nadal and 3 set match with Federer.
Berdych narrowly lost to Djokovic in a third set tie break and over all his serve has been solid in the tough situations. He has been taken to 3 sets in each of his group matches.
Coming into this tournament Tsonga has been in decent form but a little unreliable. He has managed to increase his consistency this week and that will need to continue if he is to get his first win over Berdych.
Two very different characters here with flamboyant Tsonga against the quiet Berdych but both have the big serve and big ground strokes to make this a great match.
Very difficult to pick a winner but I am going for a 3 set match with Berdych’s serve bringing him through for the win. I feel he has finished the year well and a final against Federer would cap that off nicely.
Update: Very weak performance from Berdych. His ground strokes were like guided missiles. Unfortunately they were locked on the net.
Far too many unforced errors.
Tsonga won 6-3, 7-5.
