Kerber leads their previous matches 4-2. Their last meeting was In April this year. Kerber won in straight sets on a clay court in Stuttgart. She has won both their matches this year with the other being on a Brisbane hard court in January. That was also won in 2 sets.
They have never played on grass.
This tournament has been a bit of a mess with yet more rain delays. Both players had to finish their second round matches earlier today.
Kerber was in trouble in her opening set with Gavrilova when they were forced off court yesterday. Gavrilova took that set when they resumed this morning but Kerber fought back to take sets 2 and 3 comfortably.
Suarez Navarro also lost the first set in her match with Petkovic. Petkovic was close to victory when the match continued today but Suarez Navarro managed to take the second set in a tie break. Their third set also went to a tie break which Suarez Navarro won.
Kerber has a far stronger record on grass. She starts at 1.28 .
Rain delays are real game changes and we never really know how each player will react to them. Playing 2 matches in a day is not ideal. I think we will see a higher price on Kerber in this one.
I would give Kerber the edge but won’t back her unless she gets broken first.
