Due to start at 11 pm.
Kuzmova 2.22, Kenin 1.76
Kenin won their only previous meeting. That was in June 2018 on the grass in Mallorca. She won in 2 close sets.
They are almost side by side in the WTA rankings with Kenin slightly ahead at 52nd and Kuzmova is currently at 54th.
Both players had strong seasons in 2018. Kuzmova had the better win percentage at 65% but Kenin wasn’t far behind winning 59% of her matches.
It’s a similar pattern on hard courts with Kuzmova leading 71% to 65% matches won. Kenin’s record on hard courts was a little stronger if we compare only matches on the main WTA tour.
On serve it is Kuzmova with the better numbers and she held 71% of service games on hard courts in WTA tournaments. Kenin held 65% of her service games.
Kuzmova played a very strong match to beat Zidansek in straight sets in the last round. She only faced 2 break points which were both saved. She lost just 5 points on her first serve.
Kenin fought hard to beat Petra Martic in 3 sets in the first round. She had to work hard for her service holds and was broken 4 times from the 11 break chances that Martic had.
There is very little between these players. Value is on Kuzmova as the slight underdog. She ended 2018 strongly with a final in the Dubai ITF tournament. There were a lot of strong players taking part in that week.
We have a very good chance of seeing three sets. I give the slightest of edges to Kuzmova.
Lay Kenin if she gets the first break of serve and lay the set 1 winner.
Update: Kenin broke first but Kuzmova broke back. She broke again and served for the set but Kenin broke her. Another late break of serve gave the set to Kuzmova. A tight second set was decided by a very late break for Kenin.
Kuzmova won the match 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
