WTA Australian Open, Final: Halep v Wozniacki, 8:30

Halep 1.74, Wozniacki 2.32

Wozniacki leads their previous meetings 4-2. Their most recent match was at the year end finals in Singapore last October. Wozniacki won easily in 2 sets on an indoor court.  She has won their last 3 matches with the other 2 being on grass and clay. Halep won their last 2 hard court matches.

Wozniacki has had the easier route to the final. Suarez Navarro was one of the two people to take her to 3 sets and that look unlikely after their 6-0 1st set. In the semi final Mertens kepttheir sets tight but Wozniacki was only broken once. Woz had her only poor serving day against Fett in the second round. In her other matches she has served extremely well.

Halep v Wozniacki

Halep takes on Wozniacki

Halep beat former world number 1’s in the last 2 rounds. She faced match points against Kerber in the semi final. She beat Pliskova in straight sets in the quarter final.  She had a scare against Lauren Davis in the third round and saved match point.

Wozniacki has better service hold stats for the tournament with 80% holds but has played weaker opposition. Halep has been stronger on return. Both are going for their first grand slam title. Wozniacki was in the final of the US Open in 2014 where she lost to Serena. Halep was in the French Open final last year losing to Ostapenko and also in 2014 when she lost to Sharapova.

World number 1 v 2. Value on Wozniacki to take a set. Woz has better serve stats but has not faced a returner like Halep. Halep’s win over Kerber was great preparation for the final.

Halep to win in 3 sets. Back Halep if she gets broken or if she loses set 1
