WTA Australian Open, Quarter Final: Serena Williams v Karolina Pliskova

Due to start at 2 am

S Williams 1.38, Ka Pliskova 3.55

Serena leads their previous matches 2-1.  The last two times they met were both at the US Open. Serena won in August 2018 and Pliskova won in August 2016.  All their matches were on hard courts and ended in 2 sets.

Stats for the tournament favour Serena.

Only Halep has taken a set from Serena in this tournament. She came under a lot of pressure especially in their deciding set but she held it together well to come out on top. She was looking like she was running away with the match. She took the opening set 6-1 and went a break of serve up in the second set. Halep lifted her game and fought right to the end.

Pliskova lost sets to Brengle and Giorgi in the second and third rounds.  In the fourth round Muguruza was never in the match and won just 4 games. Her serve that had been excellent earlier in the tournament deserted her.

I think there is a chance that this goes to 3 sets. Back Serena if she gets broken or loses set 1.

Update: Pliskova took the opening set and Williams took the second. IN the third set Williams had a 5-1 lead but lost the next 6 games! She had 4 match points.

Pliskova won 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
