WTA China Open, Beijing, Quarter Final: Andreescu v Osaka

Bianca Andreescu 1.78, Naomi Osaka 2.26

Due to start at 2 pm.

This will be their first meeting.

Overall results in the last 12 months and also in 2019 are strong for both players but favour Andreescu. Hard court results also favour her.

Andreescu is having an amazing season. She has won 48 of her 53 matches. She has lost just 4 hard court matches. She has won 4 hard court titles which included the US Open in August. This week she dropped her only set  in the first round against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Her toughest test came in the second round against Elise Mertens who kept the sets tight and put her under a lot of pressure. She saved all 4 of the break points she faced against Jennifer Brady in the last round.

Osaka’s season has not been quite as impressive but she has won 36 of her 49 matches in 2019. She has won 2 tournaments this year which were the Australian Open in January and Osaka, Japan in September. She has not lost a set so far this week. She had second set bagels against Andrea Petkovic and a tired Alison Riske in the last round.

Stats for the tournament are pretty close. Osaka leads the service holds with 88% games held compared to 74% for Andreescu.

It should be a great match. It is hard to go against Andreescu this season. Back her around 2.00. Lay the set 1 winner.

Update: Andreescu hit the target price before breaking Osaka’s serve. She took a 5-2 lead but Osaka fought back to 5-5 before being broken again. In set 2 Andreescu again took an early break lead but Osaka fought back again, this time taking the set. In the deciding set Andreescu led 3-1 but it was Osaka who came out on top.

Osaka won 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
