WTA China Open, Beijing: Tomljanovic v Riske

Ajla Tomljanovic 2.38, Alison Riske 1.70

Due to start around 10 am

Tomljanovic leads their previous matches 2-1. They last met in an ITF tournament on clay in April 2013. Tomljanovic won in a 3rd set tie break.  She won on a hard court in 2011. That was also in an ITF tournament and also went to 3 sets. All their matches went to 3 sets.

Slightly better overall results for Riske in the last 12 months and in 2019. Their hard court results are very even. Recent form is stronger for Riske.

Tomljanovic really should have lost in the last round but Qiang Wang retired near the end of the 2nd set.  Tomljanovic has also had some recent injury issues and retired from Toronto in August. Since then she has played some decent tennis and reached the semis finals in Zhengzhou losing to Pliskova in straight sets.

Riske had an excellent week in Wuhan and reached the final where she lost to Sabalenka in 3 sets. She is likely to be tired. Riske has a poor record in Beijing.

We have a good chance of seeing 3 sets. Despite some fatigue I still give Riske the edge. Back her around 2.00. It should be a very tight match.
