WTA Citi Open, Washington, Final: Vekic v Kuznetsova

Due to start at 10 pm

Vekic 2.28, Kuznetsova 1.73

Head to heads are 1-1. They last met In October 2016 in Tianjin, China. Kuznetsova won in straight sets on a hard court. Vekic won on a hard court in Miami in March 2014. She also won in straight sets.

Much stronger overall results for Vekic this year. Kuznetsova made a terrible start to the season and has only recently found anything approaching form. She has slightly better hard court results. Stats for the tournament favour Kuznetsova. Both have served well this week but Kuznetsova has held 93% of her service games.

Vekic has dropped just 1 set so far which was to against her lowest ranked opponent Stollar in the second round. Linette and Zheng have both played decent tennis recently but were both defeated in straight sets.

With the form that we have seen from Kuznetsova this year I was really just waiting for her to fall. She didn’t face a break point in the first round against American Kristie Ahn but expected a tougher match for her against Bogdan in the second round.  She lost just 3 games and faced 1 break point which she saved. Putintseva and Petkovic were able to break her once each.

Kuznetsova has built up some momentum this week and it must really boost her confidence. This will be a tight match but I favour her to win. Back her above 2.10.

Update: Kuznetsova was broken first in the opening set but Vekic was broken when serving for the set. She immediately broke again to take the set.

Set 2 was very tight with no breaks of serve and Kuznetsova took a messy tie break that saw 9 mini breaks.  She saved 2 match points.

Kuznetsova raced to a 5-0 lead in the third set. She was broken when serving for the match but broke serve again in the next game to take the title.

Kuznetsova won 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
