Pavlyuchenkova 1.81, Kerber 2.20
Head to heads are 5-5. The last time they met was in Tokyo last month on a hard court. Pavlyuchenkova won their semi final in 3 sets. Their other 2017 match was again on a hard court in Monterrey, Mexico in April and she also won that one in 3 sets.
All Kerber’s wins were in 2 sets. Pavlyuchenkova’s last 4 wins were in 3 sets. The other was in 2 tie breaks.
Pavlyuchenkova has better over all results this year. She won 60% of her matches compared to Kerber’s 56%. She won the title in Hong Kong earlier this month on hard courts. She reached the final in Tokyo in September, also on hard courts, losing to Wozniacki in the final.
Kerber was still world number one at Wimbledon in July. She reached the fourth round there but since then her only decent week was that semi final in Tokyo. She is now struggling to stay inside the top 20. Will she care about this week or will she just want the season to end so she can start to rebuild in 2018?
I think this will be another 3 setter with Pavlyuchenkova having the edge based on recent form.
Update: Pavlyuchenkova won in 3 sets. 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.. She was a break behind in the third set.
