WTA Finals: Pliskova v Halep

Karolina Pliskova 2.24, Simona Halep 1.78

Round Robin Stage

Due to start at 12 noon.

Halep leads their previous matches 7-3. Their most recent meeting was in March this year on a hard court in Miami.  Pliskova won that in straight sets to reach the final.  They are 1-1 indoors.

Overall results are a little better for Pliskova in 2019. There isn’t much between them indoors. Both players beat Andreescu this week.

Andreescu had injury issues in both matches but was worse against Pliskova. Pliskova made really hard work of winning their opening set and Andreescu then retired.  Pliskova played pretty well in her loss to Svitolina.

Halep also played well against Svitolina. She was  broken 4 times.  She lost the opening set to Andreescu and their 2nd set went to a tie break.  IN her last 3 trips to the WTA Finals Halep has won her first match but lost the next 2 round robin matches. She did make the final in 2014.

Stats for the week are quite even though Pliskova has served better. We probably get 3 sets but if this comes down to mental strength I am going with Halep. Back Halep around 2.20.

Update: Bit of an odd match. Pliskova started strongly and won set one 6-0. Halep came back to take set two 6-2 and she took a 2-0 lead in set 3.  Pliskova then won 5 games in a row. Halep staged a mini comeback but a slack service game gave Pliskova the match

6-0, 2-6, 6-4
