WTA Hungarian Ladies Open, Budapest, Semi Final: Cibulkova v Barthel, 4pm

Cibulkova 1.45, Barthel 3.15

This will be their first meeting.

They had similar overall results last season. Cibulkova’s results were below what we might expect from her and perhaps her marriage deflected her attention away from her tennis for a little longer than it does for most players. She won just 55% of her matches in the last 12 months. She has made the better start to 2018. Her indoor record is a little stronger although there isn’t a great deal between herself and Barthel. She has not dropped a set so far this week. Only Larsson in the quarter final put her under any real pressure. Cibulkova faced 10 break points but was only broken twice.

Barthel has really lifted her game this week. She has faced tougher opponents than Cibulkova has. Babos was the defending champion but was dumped out in 3 sets in the second round. I expected more from Bonaventure in the quarter final but she didn’t take her chances. Barthel was broken just once from 8 break chances.

Barthel  has slightly better service stats this week although Cibulkova has been much better on return.  I think we get 3 sets in this one. I give a slight edge to Cibulkova to win but the initial value is on Barthel.

Back Cibulkova her if she gets broken first(or loses the opening set.
