WTA Indian Wells, Quarter Final: Svitolina v Vondrousova

Due to start at 1 am

Svitolina 1.58, Vondrousova 2.66

Svitolina has won both their previous matches.  Their last meeting was on clay in Stuttgart in April last year. Vondrousova retired in the third set. Their other match was on a hard court in Doha also in 2018.

Overall results favour Svitolina in the last 12 months but are a little better for Vondrousova in 2019. Both players have strong hard court results in 2019. Vondrousova’s win percentage is higher. Not surprisingly Vondrousova has the higher ROI as Svitolina is usually priced quite low.

Vondrousova beat Halep in 3 sets in the last round.  Six of the 8 games in the opening set were breaks of serve.  Halep took the second set with a single break and started the deciding set with a break of the Vondrousova serve. Halep was unable to hold serve in that set.

Svitolina beat Barty in 3 sets in the last round.  At 4-4 in the first set Svitolina broke serve to serve for the set. She was broken straight back but took the set in a tie break. In fact she would serve for all 4 sets but choked each time.  In the deciding set Barty broke her serve in the fist game but Barty’s serve started to fail and she was broken in her last 3 service games of the match.

Stats for the tournament all favour Vondrousova. I favour Svitolina to win. We should get 3 sets. Back Svitolina around 1.90.

Update: Svitolina was broken in the first game of the match.  She immediately broke back but Vondrousova took the set.  Svitolina took a messy second set with a late break of serve.

In the deciding set Vondrousova broke in the 5th game but was immediately broken back and another late break gave Svitolina the match.

Svitolina won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
