WTA Istanbul Cup: Barthel v McHale

An improving McHale should be competitive but I favour Barthel

Due to start at 5 pm

Barthel 1.66, McHale 2.44

Mchale has won all 3 of their previous matches. Their most recent meeting was in August 2016 at the US Open. McHale won in 2 easy sets. She won on clay in 2015 in 2 sets.

Head to head info from Tennis Insight

Barthel has better overall results in the last 12 months. Mchale has a poor clay record in the last year.  She has 2 wins from 9 matches. Barthel won 15 of 20 on clay in the last 12 months.

Barthel made the quarter finals in Lugano on clay 2 weeks ago. She has only had a couple of good weeks this year with the other being on indoor hard courts. She reached the semi finals that week.

Mona Barthel

McHale has had some problems in the last few months. This season she has won 5 of her 15 matches. Her recent form has improved and she reached the third round in Miami on hard courts last month. In Charleston at the start of April she beat Diyas and took Kasatkina to 3 sets on the green clay.

I think we have a good chance of 3 sets. Back Barthel above 2.10.

Update: Tough match. Barthel really should have won set 1. Good fight back from a set and break behind to be a break up in set 3.
McHale won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3

what a match Sir, although Barthel failed to cross the line but she had given so much of juice to trade. The way she lifted the game in second set was awesome .

Yes a good fight. She really should have taken the opening set. Good chances for trades as she was a set and a break behind and fought back to a break ahead in the third set. Looks like Mchale’s bad spell is officially over.

Also, thanks for the comment. Makes a change from all the spam comments I usually get 🙂
