WTA Linz Final 2014

Giorgi v Pliskova

Both players had a poor day from the service line in the semi finals.

Giorgi has had by far the stronger opponents in the last 2 rounds and yet her wins have been more dominant.

Pliskova scraped through against Brengle who had reached the quarter finals due to a retirement and a withdrawal. Friedsam has had the tournament of her young career but wouldn’t have taken the first set 6-2 if Pliskova was playing at her normal level.

Giorgi will always have problems with double faults as she often doesn’t take too much off the second serve. She hasn’t been too bad so far with “just” 21 in 4 matches but with this being a final we should expect a few more nerves.

Serve is one of PLiskova’s strengths but her own second serve hasn’t been getting the job done in her last 3 matches. She was been winning just over 40% with it.

This will come down to who fights most and at times Pliskova looks like its a practice session. Giorgi’s  double faults are a concern but what she lacks from the service line she makes up for with pure will to win. I think this will be a scrappy match and Giorgi will want it just a little more.
